HEAVY RARE EARTHS

The discovery and development of new economic magnetic REEs deposits will feed the projected shortage of these elements.

At present, ionic clay deposits in southern China and Myanmar are the primary source of the world’s HREE, however the limited resource size, high environmental legacy issues of such deposits and increasing export restrictions, are driving discovery and development of other more sustainable sources of HREE. The REEs Nd, Pr, Tb, and Dy are typically enriched in peralkaline deposits and are essential for the performance of high strength permanent magnets for electric vehicles and wind turbines. In addition, greater than 90% of the REE market share is tied to these 4 REEs.
